Peppino Mele
The artisan
Peppino Mele’s jewels stand out for the unique crafting of obsidian, a volcanic vitreous rock archaically used in Sardinia to realise arrowheads and apotropaic jewels, which this goldsmith crafts in clear-cut lines and with a refined technique in combination with the traditional Sardinian filigree. Peppino Mele, after working as an apprentice at a filigree goldsmith’s workshop in Cagliari, decided to set up his own lab. He came across obsidian almost by chance, mainly thanks to his ability to create custom made jewellery taking his customers’ every need into account. This attitude, combined with his keenness to experiment, led him over the years to tackle different techniques and materials such as the crafting of coral and novel interpretations of filigree. In his workshop in the centre of Oristano, the main town of the namesake province, Peppino Mele has devoted himself to his creations for the past thirty years, wisely crafting obsidian, coral and other original stones that he skilfully enhances in a natural way by means of sophisticated and elegant gold and silver settings. He promotes his collections at the main regional trade fairs.
The collection
Peppino Mele’s jewellery stands out for the high-quality use of obsidian and the sophisticated gold and silver filigree settings characterised by elegant echoes of Sardinian symbolism and culture. Necklaces, earrings, pendants, bracelets, brooches: each piece of jewellery has a unique design that emphasises the charm of the characteristic black stone. This recognisable production is not the only one: other lines are produced with coral and other hard stones in compositions that are always linked to the culture of the island. A recent line of production is the result of research carried out by this craftsman by using and revisiting technical elements of filigree to realise contemporary objects in gold and silver and hard stones with rich reflections.
The technique
In the goldsmith’s workshop of Peppino Mele obsidian is chipped, cut and set with gold and silver, enriched with the filigree technique. Most of the filigree line is silver.
